Web Design London

Fast, mobile-first websites that look sharp, load in a blink and turn London visitors into enquiries. WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify, built for SEO from day one.

Good web design starts with one simple question: what do you want a visitor to do? Call you, book a consultation, request a quote, buy something? Everything else, from colours to code, should help that happen. That’s the thinking behind all of our web design London work.

We’re a small, senior team. You talk to the people designing and building your website, not an account manager passing notes along. And we don’t hand over a pretty site and disappear. We care whether it brings in enquiries, because that’s how you’ll judge it too.

Web design London – Proper Digital website design process

Trust is won or lost in the first five seconds

Most people land on your website from a phone. They’re on the Tube, in a queue, or half-watching TV. If the page takes too long to load, or they can’t work out what you do, they go back to Google and tap the next result. You rarely get a second chance.

So we design for that moment. A clear headline that says what you do and where. A visible phone number or booking button. Proof that you’re real: reviews, photos of your work, accreditations, the names of businesses you’ve helped. Then the detail, for people who want to read more.

It sounds obvious. Yet a surprising number of London websites still bury the phone number in the footer, open with a stock photo of a handshake, and ask people to “learn more” without saying about what. Fixing those basics often does more for enquiries than any amount of new traffic. Good web design is mostly about removing friction.

What’s included in our website design packages

Every project is quoted individually, but these things come as standard. We’d rather build them in properly from the start than charge for them later.

  • Strategy and site structure. Before anything is designed, we map out pages and keywords so each service, and each area you cover, has a page that can rank.
  • Bespoke design. No recycled themes. Layouts are built around your brand, your customers and the action you want them to take.
  • Copy that sounds like you. We write or edit your page copy so it’s clear, specific and persuasive, not padded out for search engines.
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals. Lightweight code, compressed images, caching and sensible hosting, so pages load quickly on 4G.
  • Technical SEO. Clean URLs, schema markup, an XML sitemap, meta titles and descriptions, and 301 redirects from your old site.
  • Accessibility. We build towards WCAG 2.2 AA: readable contrast, keyboard navigation, proper headings and alt text.
  • Tracking that works. GA4, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel and call tracking, with a UK GDPR and PECR compliant cookie banner using Consent Mode v2.
  • Training and handover. You’ll be able to edit your own pages, and you own the domain, the site and every login.

Our London web design process in seven steps

A clear process keeps projects on time and avoids the “can we just change everything?” moment two weeks before launch. Here’s how a typical London web design project runs with us.

Website design London project steps from discovery to launch
  1. Discovery call. We talk through your business, your best customers, competitors and what’s not working now. Usually 45 minutes.
  2. Audit and research. We look at your current site, analytics, Search Console and the businesses outranking you. If there’s existing SEO value, we protect it.
  3. Sitemap and wireframes. A simple plan of every page and a rough layout of the key ones, so you can see the structure before any design work.
  4. Design. We design the homepage and one inner page first. Once you’re happy with the direction, the rest of the site follows that style.
  5. Content. We write or polish the copy, source or brief photography, and set up page titles and descriptions.
  6. Build and testing. Development on a private staging site, then testing on real phones, tablets and browsers, plus speed and accessibility checks.
  7. Launch and aftercare. We go live, submit the sitemap to Google, watch Search Console for errors and fix anything that crops up in the first few weeks.

Most brochure sites take four to eight weeks from discovery to launch. Larger sites and online shops take longer, mainly because there’s more content to plan and more integrations to test.

Plan your website

Build your project in 30 seconds

Pick what you need. We’ll show you what drives the cost, then turn it into a fixed quote. Your choices go straight onto the form, so you don’t type them twice.

What kind of site?
Roughly how many pages?
Who writes the words?
Anything extra? (pick any)
When do you need it?

Web design London prices: what affects the cost

We give fixed quotes, so you know the price of your web design project before we start. What moves that number up or down is fairly predictable:

  • Number of unique page layouts. Twenty service pages that share one template cost far less than twenty completely different designs.
  • Copywriting. Writing every page from scratch takes time. If you already have strong copy, it’s cheaper.
  • E-commerce. Products, variations, payment gateways, delivery rules and stock syncing all add work.
  • Integrations. Booking systems, CRMs, finance calculators, membership areas and the like.
  • Migration. Moving a large old site, with hundreds of URLs and blog posts, needs careful redirect mapping.

If you want a rough idea before we speak, our guide on how much a website costs in the UK breaks down typical website design price ranges for brochure sites, small business sites and online shops.

Platforms we build on

For most service businesses we build on WordPress. It’s flexible, easy to edit, and there’s a huge pool of developers who can support it, so you’re never tied to us. We keep plugins to a minimum, which keeps the site faster and more secure.

For online shops we use WooCommerce or Shopify. Shopify suits brands that want a hosted platform with very little maintenance. WooCommerce suits businesses that want full control or have unusual product rules. We’ll tell you which fits and why, rather than defaulting to whichever is easier for us.

Do you need a custom web app instead?

Sometimes a client needs something beyond a marketing site: a quote builder, a customer portal or an internal tool. We can scope that too, and we’ll be upfront if a simpler option would do the job.

Fast, mobile-first London web design

Speed isn’t a nice extra. Slow pages lose visitors, and Google uses page experience signals as part of how it ranks sites. We aim for pages that pass Google’s Core Web Vitals on mobile, not just on a fast office connection.

London web design built mobile-first for Core Web Vitals

In practice, fast web design means:

  • Images served in modern formats like WebP, sized for the screen they’re shown on.
  • Fonts loaded efficiently, so text appears straight away.
  • No heavy page builders or sliders that ship megabytes of code nobody needs.
  • Caching and a decent host. Cheap hosting is often the hidden reason a site feels sluggish.

We test on mid-range Android phones as well as iPhones, because that’s what a lot of your customers actually use.

Website redesigns without losing your rankings

A redesign is one of the quickest ways to lose years of SEO progress. We’ve seen businesses launch a lovely new site and watch their enquiries drop by half, because old URLs disappeared and nobody set up redirects.

Before we launch any redesign, we:

  • Crawl your existing site and export every URL that gets traffic or has links pointing to it.
  • Map each old URL to the most relevant new page with a 301 redirect.
  • Carry over the content that already ranks, improving it rather than deleting it.
  • Keep page titles and headings aligned with the keywords you already rank for.
  • Watch Search Console daily for the first few weeks and fix any crawl errors fast.

Done properly, a redesign should improve your visibility. If you’re also planning to grow traffic after launch, our SEO services in London pick up where the build leaves off.

Accessibility and compliance, built in

An accessible website is easier for everyone to use, not just people with disabilities. We follow the WCAG 2.2 guidelines as a baseline: sensible colour contrast, text that resizes, forms with clear labels, and pages that work with a keyboard and screen reader.

We also set up cookie consent in line with UK GDPR and PECR, so analytics and ad tracking only fire when visitors agree. That keeps you on the right side of the ICO, and with Consent Mode v2 you still get useful modelled data in Google Analytics and Google Ads.

Location pages for the areas you cover

If you serve customers across several boroughs, or across the whole of Greater London, one generic services page won’t rank everywhere. We plan location pages that are genuinely useful: who you’ve worked for in that area, travel times, local photos, parking or access notes, and reviews from nearby customers.

What we won’t do is churn out fifty near-identical “plumber in Camden”, “plumber in Hackney” pages with the borough name swapped. Google is good at spotting those, and visitors can tell too. A handful of strong, specific pages beats a pile of thin ones every time. It’s one of the places where good web design and SEO overlap the most.

Choosing a web design agency London businesses can rely on

There are hundreds of agencies and freelancers in London, and plenty of them do good work. Whoever you choose, these questions will tell you a lot about a web design agency:

  • Who will actually build my site? Some agencies sell the project, then outsource it.
  • Will I own everything? You should own your domain, hosting account, website files and analytics. Always.
  • How do you handle SEO during a redesign? If the answer is vague, be careful.
  • What happens after launch? Ask about support, updates and how quickly they respond.
  • Can I see live sites you’ve built? Check them on your phone. Are they fast? Is it obvious what to do?

We’re happy to answer all of those on a call. If we’re not the right web design agency for you, we’ll say so.

Who we work with

Most of our clients are service businesses across London and the South East: trades and construction firms, clinics, consultants, property businesses, hospitality, and B2B companies. We also build for businesses in Pakistan and further afield, but our process is set up around UK customers, UK search behaviour and UK compliance.

If you’re a startup, we can launch a lean site quickly and grow it as the business grows. If you’re established, we’ll focus on protecting what already works while fixing what doesn’t.

Web design that works with your marketing

A website rarely works in isolation. Paid ads send traffic to it. SEO depends on its structure. Social media drives people to it. That’s why our London web design work always starts with your marketing in mind:

  • Landing pages built for Google Ads campaigns, with a single clear call to action.
  • Service and location pages planned around real search terms.
  • Tracking set up so you can see which channel brought each enquiry.
  • Forms that connect to your CRM or inbox, with automated follow-ups if you want them.

Common problems we fix on London business websites

When a new client sends us their site, we usually find a mix of the same issues. None of them are dramatic on their own. Together, they quietly cost enquiries every week.

  • No clear next step. Visitors read the page and then have nowhere obvious to go. Every page needs one main call to action.
  • Contact forms that ask too much. Ten fields when four would do. Each extra field loses a few people.
  • Slow mobile pages. Usually huge images, too many plugins or a heavy page builder.
  • Thin service pages. A single paragraph per service doesn’t answer questions, build trust or rank.
  • Broken tracking. Forms and calls aren’t recorded as conversions, so nobody knows what’s working.
  • Out-of-date trust signals. Reviews from 2019, a dead Twitter link, a copyright date from three years ago.

Good web design fixes these as a matter of course. If you’re not ready for a full rebuild, we can often fix the worst of them on your existing site first.

What a small business website really needs

You don’t need fifty pages or fancy animation to compete. For most service businesses, a strong website design has:

  1. A homepage that says what you do, who for and where, in one glance.
  2. A separate page for each core service, with prices or a price guide if you can share one.
  3. An about page with real people, real photos and a reason to trust you.
  4. Reviews and case studies close to the call to action, not hidden on their own page.
  5. A contact page with a short form, phone number, email and opening hours.
  6. Helpful articles that answer the questions customers ask before they buy.

That’s the core. Everything else should earn its place by helping visitors decide or helping you rank. Web design in London is competitive, but most competitors still miss at least two of those six.

Website care plans after launch

A website isn’t finished on launch day. WordPress, themes and plugins need updates. Content goes stale. Google changes how it ranks pages. We offer monthly care plans that cover:

  • Core, theme and plugin updates, tested before they go live.
  • Daily off-site backups and uptime monitoring.
  • Security scanning and malware clean-up if anything ever slips through.
  • A set amount of time each month for small changes, new pages or content updates.
  • A short monthly report: speed, uptime, enquiries and anything we’ve fixed.

You don’t have to take a care plan with us. If you have someone in-house, we’ll hand over everything they need. But most clients find it easier to have the people who built the site look after it.

Why choose Proper Digital for web design in London?

Staying small means senior people work on every project, you get straight answers, and we only take on work we’re confident we can do well. Our web design London clients get one point of contact, fixed prices, honest timelines and a website built to win business, not awards.

Web design London FAQs

How much does web design cost in London?

A small brochure site from a London agency typically starts in the low thousands, while larger sites and online shops cost more. We give a fixed quote after a short discovery call, so there are no surprises.

How long does a new website take?

Most brochure sites take four to eight weeks. E-commerce and larger sites usually take eight to twelve weeks, depending on content and integrations.

Can you redesign my existing website without losing rankings?

Yes. We map every important URL to its new home, carry over content that ranks and monitor Search Console after launch.

Do you offer hosting and maintenance?

We can manage hosting, updates, backups and security for you on a monthly plan, or hand everything over if you’d rather look after it yourself.

Will I be able to update the website myself?

Yes. We build with an editor you can use without code, and we include a training session at handover.

Do you only offer web design to London businesses?

No. London and the UK are our focus, but we work with clients wherever they are. Everything can be done over video calls.

How it works

From audit to results in four steps.

  1. 01 Week 1

    Audit

We look at your website, Google Business Profile, Search Console and ad accounts, plus the three competitors who keep beating you. You get a plain-English summary, not a 60-page PDF.

  2. 02 Week 1–2

    Plan

A fixed-price plan with the few things that will actually move enquiries: pages to build, keywords to win, campaigns to test and the numbers we’ll judge ourselves on.

  3. 03 Week 2–6

    Build & launch

Design, copy, development, tracking and campaigns go live, set up properly: GA4, Consent Mode, Meta CAPI and call/form tracking so every lead is counted.

  4. 04 Ongoing

    Grow & report

Monthly improvements, A/B tests and content. A short report that answers one question: how many enquiries did we bring, and what did each one cost?

Free audit · no obligation

Tell us where things stand. We’ll show you what to fix first.

Send your website (or your idea) and we’ll come back within one working day with a short, plain-English audit: what’s holding you back on Google, where your ad budget is leaking, and the three changes most likely to bring more enquiries.

  • A real person reviews it – not an automated report
  • Fixed quotes in pounds, before any work starts
  • Monthly rolling – no 12-month lock-in
  • You own your domain, website, ad accounts and data

No spam, no hard sell. We reply within one working day.
